Friday Fun Playlist: The Best Of New Music Monday Vol. 1

I don't know what Matthew Stafford has to do with this blog or this post -- but look -- GIRLS!

Without a doubt, New Music Monday is my favorite segment of this blog. Mostly because I feel like I've accomplished something as I rummaged through the interwebs to find a handful of songs I'll listen to a handful of times before something really good comes out.

Thankfully, a lof the NMM songs have stuck around and hit the heavy rotation on my iPod. This is a collection of those songs.

Kelis & The Dating Game

Remember when Clipse asked you to not ask about the loud screamin' chick with the hair. Apparently, there was a reason why. Lucky Kelis, who recently divorced Nasir Jones (b.k.a. Nas), will get $40,000 a month in the divorce settlement.

And you thought you paid a hefty fee for child support.

Anyway, here is video of the single life. [Via The Real]

Friday's 'Ridin' Dirty' Playlist

The weekend is here and all that means is that you get two days of drunken debauchery with the fellas in between riding around in your gleamin' hooptie.

You are gonna take your whip game proper in for a spot shine, right?

OK, enough random car references. Here's my "ridin' dirty" playlist. I hear that if you roll your windows down and turn your stereo up, a pretty girl might want to take a ride with you.

I swear, I saw it in Grand Theft Auto once.

Now Introducing Your First Road Trip Partner: The Oldies Guy

First of all, sorry about the one-day delay in road trip playlist fun. My iTunes and I had a disagreement in which it would delete a boatload of oldies tracks that I wanted to use in introducing our first road trip partner.

Meet The Oldies Guy. Even though he has been blessed with this generation's great technologies like YouTube, Twitter and Facebook (better known as YouTwitFace amiright?), The Oldies Guy's playlist is stuck in retro mode. And that's not necessarily a bad thing. So much of today's good music has its roots deeply entrenched in some of yester-year's great songs. (See: Kanye West soul sample usage.)

So when The Oldies Guy steps into your ride, this playlist will help you be prepared to kick it old school and take the rest of the unsuspecting road trippers on a history lesson.

  1. I Want You Back by Jackson 5 - Great bassline and melody, a fan favorite.
  2. Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay by Otis Redding - A mellow track to go with what is hopefully a smooth ride.
  3. I Feel Good by James Brown - An easy choice because of its universal sound. Everyone knows this James Brown track.
  4. My Girl by The Temptations - A must have because of how great The Temps were. Again, everyone will be singing this song.
  5. Wonderful World by Sam Cooke - Really, you can't lose with a Sam Cooke track. Has pop culture relevancy in the 2000s with its appearance in the hit Will Smith movie, 'Hitch.'
  6. Use Me by Bill Withers - A simple sound with some soulful lyrics. A classic dusty.
  7. Soul Man by Sam & Dave - Works well if there's someone named Johnny Sole in your car. (HT @wsiujohnnysole)
  8. Shout by The Isley Bros. - If you don't know this song because of its appearance in those classic laundry detergent commercials, you know it because of its cameo in 'Wedding Crashers.' Either way, you love this song and you know it!
  9. Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison - Usually long road trips lead to interesting conversations about pretty girls. This song usually gets those conversations started.
  10. California Girls by The Beach Boys - Ditto.
  11. Let's Get It On by Marvin Gaye - Another song that has ties to a commercial. Remember the Levi's ad? Anyway, this is for the ladies ... if you're lucky to be blessed with that kind of road trip.
  12. At Last by Etta James - Why, yes. It is another song for the lovers. But the fellas love it to ... it's a classic!
  13. ABC, 123 by Jackson 5 - What goes around comes around, and this road trip playlist delivers a Jackson 5 bookend. R.I.P. Michael.

The Sinatra Group SNL Skit Teases Before You Meet Your First Road Trip Mate

Saturday Night Live has seen quite an upswing in the last year or two in quality of their skits. A lot of it centered around the Presidential debate, but it's stuff like the following video that keeps me tuned to hulu.

Sorry, I spend my Saturday nights out with people. Not underneath the cloak of darkness in my bed at night.

The Five Folks You Meet On A Road Trip

Not too long ago, I came across mademan.com, a Web site that caters to my interests of wit and pretty girls. A couple of my favorite posts include the seven lies told in romantic comedies and the nine mistakes you make with your lady friend. (Ed. note: Only nine? Really? I'm sure I've made more) Anyway, their most recent linkage involves their version of an ultimate road trip playlist.

Upon further review of the track listing, I felt as if something was missing. Oh yeah, that something is called variety. See, when you go on a road trip, you encounter a variety of musical tastebuds, each wanting to be represented and satisfied.

Trust me, I've been there before. When I was Daily Egyptian sports editor, I had as many as four passengers in my ride on trips to cover games. With Carbondale being the epicenter, we've gone as far west as Springfield, Mo., as far east as New York City, as far south as Memphis, Tenn., and as far north as Evanston, Ill. So it goes without saying that as the driver in each of those (and many other ) road trips, I had to have a good mix of music in order to keep everyone happy.

For the next few days, you will meet each of these road trip partners and the playlist that accompanies them. Until then, I'll leave you with what the L.A. Times music blog called the song of the summer by an artist who will get a blog of his own tomorrow.

Drizzy!

New Music Monday

New Music Monday is the official lead-off man of LCM's Daily Playlist, in which I feature new songs that have found their way into my iPod's rotation and is usually how I start my work week.

Another good week in music downloads. I really can't believe it's mid-late July right now. I feel as if it was just yesterday when I was writing my good-bye column as a graduating member of the DE. It goes by so fast. It really does.

Enough sappy crap, here's what I found this week.

  1. Juice by Drake
  2. Poed Up by Fly Union feat. Big Sean
  3. Bread Up by T.I. feat. Scarface & Keri Hilson (hot verse from Scarface here)
  4. The Bloggers by Freeway
  5. Certified by Usher (prod. by The Neptunes -- smooth one to ride out to)
  6. Auditorium by Mos Def feat. Slick Rick
  7. Stay (feat. Marsha Ambroshius), Pachanga by Fabolous (his new album is going to be one of the best of 2009)
  8. Too Many Rappers by The Beastie Boys feat. Nas
This week, I also landed an oldie-but-goodie in Oasis' "Wonderwall" and the infamous debut of Greg "G-Reg" Olson and the rest of Miami's Seventh Floor Crew.

Oh, and for the record ... The U's Rap Song > Bradley's Rap Song. Book it.

Do you have a suggestion for New Music Monday? Is there a song that I should download? How about an artist I should keep my eye on? Send all questions, comments, concerns and tips to lcmedina1986@hotmail.com.

Feel Good Friday Playlist

It's been a while since I've felt this good on a Friday. And that is saying something especially when you take into consideration that a week ago today I was downtown barhopping with some good friends and blowin' up Twitter from the Cubs-Cards game at Wrigley Field.

With that said, the weather is effin beautiful in Southern Illinois and it's gonna be like this all weekend long. No need to blow it by blogging inside or heating up your XBOX 360 on that NBA Live tip.

So here is my advice. Follow it exactly as I propose it:
  • Call some friends.
  • Get in your car.
  • Roll the windows down.
  • Turn the stereo up.
  • Go somewhere and barbeque.
  • Make sure you can hear the tunes.
It's a request so simple, a Creighton fan could do it. This playlist will show off my musical versatility and the common theme of something special. Speaking of which, I think it's about that time for me to find someone special. Don't ya think?

If it happens, great. If it doesn't, well, I've got a badass summer playlist for ya.
  1. All Summer Long by Kid Rock
  2. Fly by Sugar Ray
  3. Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind
  4. (Hey Leonardo) She Likes Me For Me by Blessid Union Of Souls
  5. Story Of A Girl by Nine Days
  6. Heaven by Los Lonely Boys
  7. Jessie's Girl by Rick Springfield
  8. Wonderwall by Oasis
  9. How Bizarre by OMC
  10. Benny & The Jets by Elton John
  11. You And I Both by Jason Mraz
  12. I'm Yours by Jason Mraz
  13. Hands Down by Dashboard Confessional
  14. Kiss by Prince
  15. P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) by Michael Jackson
  16. I Want You Back by The Jackson 5
  17. Now That We Found Love by Heavy D
  18. This Is How We Do It by Montell Jordan
  19. Too Close by Next
  20. Summer Love by Justin Timberlake
  21. Senorita by Justin Timberlake
  22. Beautiful Girls Remix by Sean Kingston feat. Fabolous & Lil' Boosie
  23. Feel So Good by Mase
  24. Ride Wit Me by Nelly
  25. Ain't No Woman Like The One I Got by The O'Jays
  26. Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison
  27. Can't Get Enough Of Your Love Baby by Barry White
  28. Sexual Healing by Marvin Gaye
  29. My Girl by The Temptations
  30. This Magic Moment by The Drifters
  31. What A Wonderful World This Could Be by Sam Cooke
  32. You Can't Hurry Love by Diana Ross
Playlist Time: 2 hours 5 minutes 2 seconds.

Have a wonderful weekend!

2009 Summer Playlist Addendum

We are somewhere in the middle of the July and that means your summer playlist should still be alive and kicking. But if you're looking for something fresh to add to your iTunes, then you've come to the right place.

A handful of songs have hit the radio waves since I posted my original summer playlist and I would encourage you to add them to yours.

In the coming days, I will post a re-release of the 2009 Summer Hitlist. Until then, check out these tracks.
  1. Know Your Enemy by Green Day
  2. She's A Genius by JET
  3. Pretty Girls by Wale (because, really, that's what summer is all about)
  4. Something That I Like by Ryan Leslie feat. Pusha T
  5. You're Not My Girl by Ryan Leslie
  6. Think Good Thoughts by Drake
  7. Digital Girl Remix by Jamie Foxx feat. Drake, Kanye West & The Dream
  8. Death Of Autotune by Jay-Z
  9. Don't Trust Me by 3OH3
  10. Day N Nite by Kid Cudi (it's been out for a while, but people are really warming up to it now. no pun intended)
  11. Boom Boom Pow by Black Eyed Peas (liked it at first, now annoying mostly because I hear it four times a day because it is SI Miners 2B/SS Tony Roth's walk-up music)
  12. Make Her Say by Kid Cudi, Kanye West & Common (also known as Poke Her Face)
  13. Leanin' by Slim Thug feat. UGK (one of those songs about driving in a candy-painted car)
That's really all I got for now. Got a suggestion? Leave it in the comments section.

New Music Monday: It's Faboloso!

Time to refresh your iTunes, folks. It's New Music Monday!

Here are some of the newest tunes to catch my ear and catch-on to the rotation.
  1. Salute by Fabolous feat. Lil' Wayne
  2. The Winner by Drake
  3. She's A Genius by JET
  4. Get It by Cam'ron feat. Mase
  5. Lookin' 4 Ya by Andre 3000
  6. The Fabolous Life by Fabolous feat. Ryan Leslie
  7. Watch Your Shorty by Fabolus feat. Nas & Ne-Yo
  8. American Gangsta by Twista
  9. Warning by The Clipse feat. Rock City
  10. Pretty Girls by Wale
Lotsa F-A-B-O-L-O-U-S because he's got a new album dropping soon and will feature guest spots by Jay-Z, Nas, Ne-Yo and probably more. I can't wait. As a rapper, Fabolous reminds me a lot of Rasheed Wallace. Like Wallace, Loso has lots of skills that could tear other emcee's apart without blinking twice. On the other hand, Fab drops some tame lines on guest spots at times, which is eerily reminiscent of when 'Sheed decides he isn't motivated.

Here's hoping for a motivated Fabolous and a killer album.

And for those of you who aren't hip-hop heads, an alternative pick in JET's She's A Genius off their upcoming album.

You Hear That? That's Real T@lk. Listen.

Over at The Big Dead Sidebar, I'm used to getting tips (and if you've got any, please send to bigdeadsidebar(AT)gmail(DOT)com) ... but here's a first. A musical tip.

Brandon "Real T@lk" Williams and I go back to the days in which I was known as Funky Cold Medina in writing classes at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Strapped with a creative imagination, slick word play and a sharp tongue, "Real T@lk" delivers some goods with "The Mo Betta Mixtape." Some people say that things change and people change as the age. But with Real T@lk, it's the same-old stuff.

And that's a good thing.

Check it out.

Real T@lk - The Mo Betta Mixtape [JukeSquad Worldwide]

Busta + Big Tigger = Niiiiiice

I'm still waiting for Busta Rhymes' next big-time album. He coulda been one of the all-time greats if not for label issues or the paradigm shift in the hip-hop community from New York to the South.

As for Big Tig, he's better than about 75 percent of the rap game. If you're like me and go back to the days when BET played music videos and Tigger had a hit show in Rap City Tha Bassment, he outshined almost every rapper he stepped in the booth with.

Maybe he should get his own album.

Just a thought.

Another thought. The girl at the 2:33 mark. Yeah, she got me sprung!

Throwback Tuesday: Betha's Back!

Throughout the 1990s, the Bad Boy record label was running things in New York. In its prime, it featured plenty of show-stoppers and hit-makers such as Black Rob, The Lox, Puff Daddy (before he changed his name a half-dozen times) and some guy named Christopher Wallace that you might know as The Notorious B.I.G.

Sometimes lost in the mix is Mase, who was Puffy's top sidekick in the post-B.I.G. era. The two parlayed Diddy's business sense and beats with old-school samples combined with Mason Betha's slick rhyme scheme into one of the most successful rap duos in the game.

See, Mase had "swag" before "swag" was an overused urban term suburban white kids said because their one half-black friend said it. The Artist Formerly Known As Murda Mase paved the way for guys like Fabolous to be successful witht heir style, not to mention he was the door opener for the careers of Cam'ron and Jim Jones, which led to Juelz Santana and the Dipset movement.

He was the face of Harlem hip-hop.

However, without much of an advanced notice, Mase turned in his Bad Boy chain for the Good Book and the word of God and became Pastor Mason. That stood for only a few years before he came back as a clean rapper, and despite the luke-warm success radio psuedo-hits like "Welcome Back" and "Breathe, Stretch, Shake" before he took a major career misstep in joining G-Unit.

I still can't forgive that, specifically that line "I got hoes in the back of the church humming your name" line. Boooooo!

Let's fast forward to 2009, where Mase has declared his return to the game, inspired by the death of Michael Jackson. Sure, he has no clue who's hot. And in turn, the generation has no idea who Mase is.

But I'm sure if you team him with an album laced with the production of hit-makers like Kanye, DJ Premier, 9th Wonder and Just Blaze people will once again care about Mase.

Here's hoping Mase's return to the game is successful. He could be the breath of fresh air that a prefabricated lab-rapper could never be. And now, tracks I like by Ma$e.
  1. Feel So Good
  2. Lookin' At Me
  3. Breathe, Stretch, Shake
  4. Welcome Back
  5. Tell Me What You Want From Me (feat. Total)
  6. Can't Hold Me Down (feat. Puff Daddy)
  7. Been Around The World (feat. The Notorious B.I.G. & Puff Daddy)
  8. Lean Back Remix (feat. Fat Joe & Eminem)

Mase's Return Inspired By Michael Jackson's Death [All Hip Hop]

New Music Monday (With An Old School 4th Of July Tribute)

I was this close to putting a playlist of throwback tracks that I've recently acquired. Because, apparently, I'm the only person on the face of the earth that hadn't heard "Everlong" by the Foo Fighters.

Instead, I've got a different kind of throwback tribute at the end of this post.

Here are the new tunes that caught my ear over the last week.
  1. She Got A Friend by Gucci Mane feat. Juelz Santana and Big Boi
  2. Pay Up by Killer Mike
  3. Without Me by Young Buck feat. 8Ball & MJG
  4. I Know Your Name by The Alchemist feat. Lil' Wayne & Travis McCoy (from Gym Class Heroes)
  5. You're Not My Girl by Ryan Leslie
  6. Gotta Get Mo by Paul Wall (nice production by Travis Barker ... yes, the Blink-182 drummer)
  7. Plane In The Air by Erk The Jerk feat. Too Short
  8. Gangsta by Maino feat. B.G.
  9. Successful by Drake feat. Trey Songz
  10. The Life by Willy Northpole feat. Ne-Yo
Finding 10 songs worth downloading this week was pulling teeth. To be honest, some of these tracks really are borderline acceptable. For example, "Successful" by Drake was a track that has been in my rotation for a while, but I noticed I had not posted it anywhere, so I thought it was a good time. Also, Too Short's appearance makes "Plane In The Air" a likable track. But other than the debut of Drake's video for "Best I Ever Had," which came to many harsh reviews, it's been a "meh" week in music.

And to top off your 4th of July weekend, here's the Team USA video tribute to Marvin Gaye's singing of The National Anthem.

Happy Birthday America!

Happy Birthday America. Here's a present, a few songs that have 'America' in their title. And some that don't.

  1. The National Anthem as played by Jimi Hendrix
  2. American Woman by Lenny Kravitz
  3. American Bad Ass by Kid Rock
  4. American Idiot by Green Day
  5. (Believe It Or Not) The Theme From The Great American Hero by Joe Scarbury
  6. American Pie by Don McLean
  7. Everyday America by Sugarland
  8. American Superstar by Flo-Rida feat. Lil' Wayne
  9. American Terrorist by Lupe Fiasco
  10. American Boy by Estelle feat. Kanye West
  11. White America by Eminem
  12. American Television by Ben Lee
  13. Courtesy of the Red White & Blue by Toby Keith (probably, the most patriotic song I know outside of God Bless America or The Star Spangled Banner)
Playlist Time 56 minutes, 45 seconds

Best I Ever Had Video And A Fourth Of July Playlist

Good news: I survived a pretty sweet birthday celebration that Ludacris would have been proud of as it was full of (fried) chicken and beer. Ooh, and there was a champagne toast. Stay classy, Carbondale, indeed.

So here's the new Drake video for Best I Ever Had, which is currently my favorite song and slowly turning into my song of this summer.

I'm not sure what Kanye was thinking when directing the video. The concept of pretty girls and a basketball game usually catches my attention, but there is no correlation to the song. Eh, screw it, pretty girls in a music video is good enough for me.

Also, I know a lot of people take to the roads for the 4th of July weekend to visit friends, family members and random encounters from Craigslist. Consider this your playlist for the weekend from a guy who knows a little something about making road trip playlists.

  1. American Woman by Lenny Kravitz
  2. My President by Young Jeezy feat. Ludacris
  3. Homecoming by Kanye West
  4. American Bad Ass by Kid Rock
  5. Good Life by Kanye West feat. T-Pain
  6. American Idiot by Green Day
  7. Ignition Remix by R. Kelly
  8. Changes by Tupac Shakur
  9. Cowboy by Kid Rock
  10. Big Poppa by The Notorious B.I.G.
  11. American Pie by Don McLean
  12. Chelsea Dagger by The Fratellis
  13. Tessie by Dropkick Murphys
  14. My Girl by The Temptations
  15. Hey Leonardo by Blessid Union Of Souls
  16. Paper Planes by MIA
  17. Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind
  18. Free Falling by Tom Petty
  19. Holidae In by Chingy, Ludacris & Snoop Dogg
  20. Tipsy by J-Kwon
  21. Ride With Me by Nelly
  22. You Can't Hurry Love by Diana Ross
  23. Blame It by Jamie Foxx feat. T-Pain

  26. (Sittin' On The) Dock Of The Bay by Otis Redding
  27. Swing by Savage
  28. Killing Me Softly by The Fugees
  29. Summer Madness by Kool & The Gang
  30. Don't Stop Believing by Journey
Playlist Time: 2 hours, 2 minutes and 19 seconds.

What I REALLY Want For My Birthday

Why, yes, I'd love for Erin Andrews to be gift-wrapped. You know, if that's her thing, of course.

Inspired by Jeff's post at The Big Dead Sidebar, here is a list of things I would like for my birthday in addition to what Jeff mentioned. Hope it's not too late.

  1. A date with Erin Andrews. Will settle for Megan Fox, Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Alba, Meagan Good, Scarlett Johansson, Eva Mendes or Erin Andrews' hot sister.
  2. A Cubs win. Because they can't lose to Ross Ohlendorf and Virgil Vazquez on back-to-back nights, right?
  3. An advance copy of Jay-Z's next album.
  4. Kanye, Jay-Z and Drake on one track.
  5. An announcement by Lil' Wayne in which he retires from using the autotune.
  6. A 1-day studio session with T-Pain in which I use the autotune to produce my own CD.
  7. An announcement from Mariah Carey's publicist that she is divorcing Nick Cannon and heading to Carbondale, Ill., to get away from it all.
  8. For SIU to use their final remaining scholarship on 6-10 forward Roscoe Davis.
  9. A time machine, so I can have Lindsay Lohan (circa Mean Girls) all to myself.
  10. Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift jumping out of a cake to sing me happy birthday.

This is my party, so get fly if you want to

Today, yours truly turns 23. This is the age when you realize that the only thing about being older is that the price on your insurance premium goes down. On the other hand, the only milestone birthdays come with zeros at the end of them.

With that said, here are my favorite songs since I've been born.
  1. I'm On A Boat (2009) by The Lonely Island feat. T-Pain
  2. My President (2008) by Young Jeezy feat. Nas
  3. Hey There Delilah (2007) by The Plain White T's
  4. Make It Rain (2006) by Fat Joe feat. Lil' Wayne
  5. We Major (2005) by Kanye West feat. Nas
  6. Drop It Like It's Hot (2004) by Snoop Dogg
  7. Ignition Remix (2003) by R. Kelly
  8. Air Force Ones (2002) by Nelly (At this time in my life, I actually had a pair of the special edition Puerto Rican AF1s)
  9. The Cha Cha Slide (2001) by Casper
  10. Big Pimpin' (2000) by Jay-Z feat. UGK
  11. Cowboy (1999) by Kid Rock
  12. Still Not A Player (1998) by Big Pun feat. Joe
  13. Lovefool (1997) by The Cardigans
  14. I Believe I Can Fly (1996) by R. Kelly (How awesome was the soundtrack to Space Jam?)
  15. First Of Tha Month (1995) by Bone Thugs & Harmony (How can I leave a song about the 1st of the month off this list?)
  16. I'll Make Love To You (1994) by Boyz II Men
  17. Gin & Juice (1993) by Snoop Doggy Dogg
  18. Smells Like Teen Spirit (1992) by Nirvana
  19. O.P.P. (1991) by Naughty By Nature
  20. Ice Ice Baby (1990) by Vanilla Ice
  21. Funky Cold Medina (1989) by Tone Loc (This one is self explanatory)
  22. Pour Some Sugar On Me (1988) by Def Leppard
  23. Never Gonna Give You Up (1987) by Rick Astley
  24. Kiss (1986) by Prince
Obviously, there are hundreds of more killer tracks, but there are some that just caught my eyes and ears as I scrolled through my iTunes.

Birthday Sex? Sounds Good To Me!

Birthday sex? Yes, please. (Austin Powers'd)

I'm 23. Woo!

And unless I make it rain, pass out on a park bench and wake up asking myself why is this pretty girl in my bed, it won't be considered to be a celebration.

All jokes aside, thanks to my Mom and Grandma and everyone else who helped raise me. And a special shout out to my friends, who surely will get me intoxicated to the point where I imagine all the stuff mentioned above actually happened.
